DEXA Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry, or DEXA, is a state-of-the-art radiology procedure, which determines bone mineral density or bone mass. The information obtained is compared to a reference population whose age, sex and ethnic background are similar to yours. Our technologists will enter your information into the computer and your results will be averaged with the reference population that matches you best.

Who Should Have a Bone Density Test?

The following is a list of individuals strongly recommended to have a bone density:

  • Post-menopausal women not taking estrogen
  • Personal history of a hip fracture
  • History of smoking
  • A male with clinical conditions associated with bone loss
  • Use of medications that are known to cause bone loss, including corticosteroids such as Prednisone, various anti-seizure medications such as Dilantin and certain barbiturates, or high-dose thyroid replacement drugs.
  • Have Type I diabetes, liver disease, or kidney disease
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • History of thyroid condition
  • History of fracture or mild trauma

Why is DEXA the Best Method?

Dexa scanning has been proven to be the most accurate method of measuring bone density, uses the least amount of radiation, and is lower in cost than other methods.

How do I Prepare for the Exam?

There is virtually no preparation for the exam, but it is recommended that you not take calcium or calcium supplement 12 hours prior to the exam. Wear comfortable clothing the day of the exam. You will be asked to change if you are wearing any metal such as snaps and zippers as they interfere with the test.

What can I Expect During the Test?

The Dexa is painless. You will be asked to lie on your back on a table. The scanner will pass over one area of your body and the technologist will take 3 pictures of your back in this position and then you will be positioned on your right side for 3 additional images. Our radiologist will produce a report for your physician based on the bone density measurements and your medical history.

How Long Will a DEXA Scan Take?

The exam will take approximately 15 minutes.

How do I get my Results?

At NVRA, our radiologists will interpret your images promptly and the results will be forwarded to your physician either by phone, fax, and mail and or delivered electronically. Your referring physician will share the results with you.
