Mammography
Mammography provides a safe and reliable means of detecting breast disease (i.e. Cancer) in its earliest, most treatable stage. It may provide the key to successful treatment and cure. The American Cancer Society estimates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Mammography, a physical breast exam by a physician, and breast self examination are the three components of early detection.
Naugatuck Valley Radiological Associates (NVRA) Women's Centers provide women with mammography services in a private and comfortable setting. Exams are performed on state of the art equipment by certified mammography technologists. NVRA is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is FDA certified. Our team of Board Certified Radiologists will interpret the exams and provide referring physicians with prompt results.
What is the Difference Between Screening and Diagnostic Mammography?
Screening
Screening Mammography is a mammography examination on a woman without any specific symptoms. The American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology recommend annual mammograms for women 40 and older. Women with a strong family history of breast cancer should check with their physician to assess if they should begin screenings earlier.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic Mammography is performed on a woman with signs and symptoms of breast disease.
How Should I Prepare for my Mammogram?
You will be more comfortable during the test if you schedule it one week following the completion of your menses, when your breasts are less tender. If you have previously had a mammogram at another location, it is recommended that you bring your previous films with you at the time of your appointment for a comparison. The day of your exam, do not apply any body powder, deodorant, or perfume. It is best to wear a two piece outfit such as a shirt and pants versus a dress since you will be required to change from the waist up.
What can I Expect?
Advise the technologist if you are pregnant, breast feeding or have had breast implants or a biopsy prior to the start of the test. The technologist will position your breast(s) on the mammography machine. Once in position the technologist will guide the machine to apply the accurate amount of compression to smooth out the breast tissue. You may feel some brief discomfort with the compression. There are no limitations to normal activities after your mammogram is complete.
How do I get my Results?
At NVRA, our radiologists will interpret your images promptly and the results will be forwarded to your physician either by phone, fax, and mail and or delivered electronically. Your referring physician will share the results with you.
