Introducing the New Advancement of RapidScreen CAD Technology

Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, taking more lives annually than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. The startling statistics surrounding this disease underscores the frightening reality which will impact an estimated 213,000 patients this year alone. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 50% of lung cancer cases will be diagnosed at a very late stage. Of these cases, only 5% of the patients will live for five years. However, when detected early, survival rates for lung cancer increases dramatically. With early detection the five-year survival rate increases from 15% to 49%. Clearly the earlier lung cancer is discovered, the greater a patient's chances are on surviving the disease.  This emphasis on early detection is so crucial to effectively combating lung cancer that NVRA continuously researches and reinvests in technology geared around enhancing diagnostics and improving patient statistics like the ones listed above.

With the Introduction of the RapidScreen chest X-ray, NVRA can significantly improve the detection of early stage lung cancer. This computer aided detection (CAD) system provides a virtual double read, or second pair of eyes for our radiologists. After a routine chest X-ray, our radiologists review the images in the traditional comprehensive manner. The RapidScreen system will then immediately circle and display suspicious pulmonary nodules detected on the original X-ray. The process utilizes computer analytics and specifications designed to acquire and displays areas of potential abnormality. The computer does not detect disease independently from the radiologist, but rather serves as a tool to enhance diagnostic performance.

Naugatuck Valley Radiology has the area facilities offering RapidScreen; this computer-aided detection (CAD) product is unlike any other in the market. Aided with this technological advancement, it is our goal to further champion the fight against lung cancer through improved early detection and diagnosis.
