The Different Types of Radiology | A Public View of Radiology

Feb 14, 2022

Much of America’s perception of doctors and medical specialists is shaped by television shows like Grey’s Anatomy, in which Emergency Department (ED) surgeons do everything from setting broken bones to reading x-rays. Popular television shows like this can create misconceptions about the medical field, as actors portraying doctors often are written to perform a variety of medical procedures.

This is often why people fail to understand that there are actually specialists for each medical practice from surgeons to cardiologists to anesthesiologists and, of course, radiologists. For many people, radiology is a foreign concept.

Traditionally, radiologists – along with other medical specialists – have been left out of the picture. But television writers are not the only ones who overlook or misunderstand the important work that radiologists do.

In a recent survey of nearly 2,500 adults, researchers found that many people do not know what radiologists really do. While 79 percent of participants knew that radiologists interpreted imaging studies, nearly half were unaware that radiologists are actual doctors. What’s even more surprising is that only a third of participants knew that radiologists perform biopsies and several minimally-invasive procedures.

Radiologists Are a Valuable Part of Any Medical Team

While many people do not know that radiologists are experts in imaging and an essential part of the healthcare team, these specialists are very important in the world of healthcare. Radiologists work closely with doctors and other medical professionals to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. In an attempt to change the narrative and public view of radiology, here is a bit more information about radiologists.
